Possible bug with lirc_i2c+bttv

Erik Fleischer
Hi all,

I have noticed, that although the lirc_i2c module
uses the bttv module, the running kernel does seem
to know that the lirc_i2c module depends on the
bttv module.

Take a look what lsmod says about bttv:

bttv                   73728   0  (autoclean)

So at any time the bttv module may be removed, even
automatically. When this happens, the lirc_i2c
becomes unusable and the only way I have found
to get lirc working again is a reboot.

This causes rather strange problems. Running certain
programs (for example starting oss), that have nothing
to do with lirc, can disrupt it. Or in other case the
remote suddenly stops working because something
triggered the automatic unloading of modules. Which
happens rather seldom, but it has happened to me
already.

The system I am using:
SuSE Linux 9.0 with suse kernel 2.4.21-191
lirc 0.6.6 (that comes with SuSE 9.0)
Hauppauge WinTV
lirc_i2c

I do not know whether newer versions are also affected,
but so far I am unable to compile lirc 0.7.1 because
of the suse kernel. (And I will not change the kernel
because of lirc.).

Any comments on this problem?

Best regards,
Erik

now that i think about it, I may have had this problem...

also, when i do a 'modprobe -r lirc_i2c' on a standard console, i jump to some
kbd> prompt and i don't really know what to do there...

if i do this at another console, all input activity doesn't work, mouse,
keyboard, etc...

i have never linked this problem to bttv, and i do use that...
